Form 2848 power of attorney
Form 2848 is the IRS form that authorizes an eligible person, such as a CPA, to represent a taxpayer before the IRS.
Form 2848 gives someone permission to deal with the IRS for you. The IRS says you use it to authorize an individual to represent you, and that person must be eligible to practice before the IRS. CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are eligible.
The form lists the tax matters and years the representative may handle. With it on file, the representative can talk to the IRS, receive notices and respond for you. It does not hand over your decisions. You still approve what is filed. Representation often starts with an IRS audit or an IRS CP2000 notice. See the representation section of the IRS problems page.
