# Property tax protest

A property tax protest is a formal challenge to an appraisal district's value or action, heard by the appraisal review board, usually due by May 15.

Texas owners have a right to protest to the appraisal review board if they disagree with the appraisal district's value or its actions on their property. The protest starts after the district mails a notice of appraised value.

The deadline in 2026 was May 15, or 30 days after delivery of the notice, whichever is later. Check the notice for your own date. Owners usually bring comparable sales or evidence of errors. A home with a [homestead exemption](https://wallacecpa.multisites.ai/glossary/homestead-exemption) is protested the same way.
